Dolores Dallas
"I was telling other people's stories. Now I'm telling... a perception of my story. It's not the whole story, but it is a perception, it's just a little bite of the apple, let's say... I think it tastes sweeter when i get to tell my story."
Dolores Dallas is Cowichan from Duncan, BC. She has studied at Spirit Song and the First Nations Theatre School in Toronto and at the En'owkin Centre in Penticton, where she worked with the Native youth theatre (Rainbow Theatre). Dolores has also worked with Headlines Theatre, Full Circle, The Firehall Arts Centre, and on numerous productions with Sen'klip Theatre Company. She wrote, directed and performed her solo production 4 Generations at the BC Festival of the Arts. As an installation and performance artist she incorporates photography and video skills into her gift of storytelling. Dolores now resides in Vancouver, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from ECIAD, majoring in Media Arts.
"It is through my art and writing that I have found my place and voice in First Nations society. I am an artist in two and three-dimensional works, a performing artist, writer, singer and actor, creator of video and photography. I feel as an artist it is my job to bring my views and experiences to the public's attention, no matter how trivial or controversial my subject matter may be. If my works can create discussions then my work is successful. It is through these discussions that people come together. As artists we can create positive changes in our environment and our societies if change is needed."
